Review of WWE ‘13 from THQ

With more plot twists than a diving hurricanrana and more crazy antics than you can shake a folded up metal chair at, WWE bursts onto the gaming scene again with it’s new title WWE ‘13. Now, where to start with this hulking behemoth of a brand?

7346daniel_bryan_3

Story

This is where WWE ‘13 really shines, taking you through arguably the best period of ‘sports entertainment’ in it’s Attitude Mode. Players will experience the feuds of the late 90’s starring Stone Cold, The Rock, Shawn Michaels and more. Going through the iconic era, match by match, war by war, is reminiscent of all the times in wrestling games of old when one attempted to replicate such events, inevitably leaving an underwhelming after taste. Not so here though! The attitude mode is all about reliving those epic moments and the matches give you chance to do such that. Merely completing the match in a mandatory fashion, such as winning by pinfall straight after a finisher will progress you nicely through the campaign, but where’s the fun in that? WWE ‘13 tasks you with fulfilling specific, secondary objectives throughout each match that not only more accurately represent the event, but also net you some great unlockables once completed. With easily 11 hours of playtime in this mode alone, fans of the old(ish) school of wrestling are extremely well catered for.

Speaking of playtime, WWE Universe returns, as if it wouldn’t! Giving players almost unprecedented levels of customisation with adding cards, events and championships. Players can add storylines; just generally make it their own. It can be pretty daunting at first, but sticking with it will provide to be endlessly entertaining; the amount of time fans can expect to be here is staggering! Ultimately similar to the last WWE game, save for a few notable exceptions such as being able to reset the mode when things are getting a little too convoluted!

Gameplay

No matter what game type you know and love, the WWE games never disappoint; this one is no exception. Whether you get your kicks from chucking people over the top rope or settling down for a good ol’ fashioned slobberknocker, WWE ‘13 has got you covered! Hit detection has thankfully been improved in this year’s iteration, attempting top turnbuckle leaps are now feasible; swinging wildly facing the opposite direction is mostly a thing of the past! Yes there are still some iffy moments but it’s come a long way. Controls are not dissimilar from last year’s entry and those fluent will have no trouble acclimatizing. Unfortunately, for some mysterious unbeknownst reason, a tutorial is not present; I’m not sure why. Players making their first foray are going to struggle, especially considering a likely first venture will be the Attitude mode. Whilst it’s great fun completing little side objectives, having to constantly paw your way through the in-game menu whilst trying to figure out how to get a chair from under the ring is not fun. Some on-screen hints would have greatly benefited the early parts of this mode.

Action is generally fluid, grappling looks great and punches feel weighty. Camera angles can sometimes be annoyingly erratic and disorientating. Trying to replicate real-life camera shots at opportune moments during the fight can result in the camera wafting back and forth, this can be turned off it it gets a little much though! Irish whips can get a bit sketchy with the AI consistently reversing them. There are sliders to determine the computers behavioural patterns, influencing how often it will reverse and counter your efforts and such, yet I personally didn’t notice too much of a difference after altering them. Unfortunately, another case of a lack of tutorials I feel.

Character weights also matter, smaller wrestlers can no longer throw their larger counterparts about like a scrunched up leotard; the bearings and postures of the larger fellows are likewise more believable. New are the aptly, albeit terribly named ‘OMG Moves’, these use a stored finisher in special circumstances for extravagant results, such as destroying the ring with a suplex from the top turnbuckle, or putting someone through the announcers table. Alongside these are the satisfying comeback moves, essentially a QTE that triggers when you’ve taken a pounding to critical levels, these can, hopefully, swing the fight back in your favour.

As you might expect, customisation runs rampant throughout WWE ‘13, it’s difficult to actually play with stock characters and rings. Given all the options to change things up, it’s surprising how little time I ended up playing the game, creating freaks of nature is severely addictive! Unfortunately, abusing the create a character system is a little too tempting, giving your wrestler almost max stats seems to have neither penalties nor repercussions; running into these online can be infuriating.

The online has been a bit of a mixed bag for me, against like-minded players who genuinely want to play fair, it can be great fun. With reversals all over the place; stored finishers becoming nasty surprises, it truly can become a spectacle. These matches are few and far between however, with the majority of players sprinting across the ring flinging themselves at you, knowing that the counter will fail due to the connection issues. Matches have been inconsistent with lag rearing it’s unwelcome head but it did sort itself out after a while. It is also worth pointing out that the ‘rank reset’ glitch has reportedly been fixed, I was jammy enough not to fall victim to this, however many unfortunately have.

Presentation

After an enormous patch in excess of 600Mb and a way larger install, you would expect loading times to be at a minimum, not quite. Constantly saving and loading between menus can become a drag; unskippable videos such as when loading the Attitude mode can also be incredibly frustrating. The graphics are mostly superb, aside from a couple of dodgy faces and a little clipping, it looks great. Crowds seem to have been spruced up, getting on their feet when the momentum of the match peaks is a nice touch.

The commentators are always the bane of sports titles, usually becoming repetitive after just a few rounds. WWE ‘13 is sporadic in it’s sparkles, occasionally the commentators call outs are spot on; considering some of the audio for the Attitude mode was ripped straight from the events themselves, it should be! Crowd samples were also used, yet with the editing process filtering out the F in WWF, it can come across a little tacky in parts! The main menu music consists of excerpts from the wrestlers, mostly, catchy ring entrance tracks. Whether hit or miss, they can always raise a smile trying to remember which superstar they represent; followed by kicking yourself when you realise that it used to be your favourite years ago!

Some insignificant, non game-breaking glitches still roam freely, yet clipping isn’t anywhere near as much of an issue as it once was in previous titles, so that’s that headache gone at least! One thing I will draw attention to, is that the save file gets pretty large; I’m not talking PS3 Skyrim large either, where that maxed out for me at about 17Mb per save file, WWE ‘13 will sap around 3Gb! For some reason it counts the install as part of your save game; that isn’t really convenient! For PS Plus users, don’t try and upload your saved data, it isn’t happening! It’s also copyright protected too, which would lead to a nightmare for some of you especially creative people out there if something were to go tragically wrong with your console. Let’s just hope that doesn’t happen though!

Should You Buy?

If you’re any kind of a fan of wrestling, be it the focused upon Attitude Era, or just getting into it now, then this title is most definitely worth a purchase. Compiling the largest roster to date, although with the two eras some are more or less re-skins, was no easy feat. Attention to each wrestlers mannerisms and animations are unparalleled; making the overall package a true homage. With a hefty amount not unlocked from the get go, there’s a lot of incentive to go and unlock the extras; mastering the Attitude bouts will be your best bet for this. Replayability is going to be through the roof for fans, especially with the most comprehensive Universe Mode to date.

If you’re not a fan of the series, nothing much is going to change your mind about this one I wouldn’t imagine, plus if you’re new, you’ll likely be in for a steep learning curve what with the lack of tutorials abound. If you are interested however, this would be a great place to start, learning retrospectively how the storylines of the Attitude Era in the late 90’s transformed the company into the empire it is today is worth it alone for the sense of intrigue involved.

PC gameplay footage from DmC Devil May Cry released

DmC Devil May Cry from Capcom is out tomorrow on the PC, and to keep you going they have released some PC gameplay footage.

ScreenShot0000311_thumb1

In this retelling of Dante’s origin story which is set against a contemporary backdrop, DmC Devil May Cry retains the stylish action, fluid combat and self-assured protagonist that have
defined the iconic series but inject a more brutal and visceral edge.

The Dante of DmC is a young man who has no respect for authority or indeed society in general. Dante knows that he is not human, but also that he is not like the demons that have
tormented him throughout his life. Caught between worlds, he feels like an outcast.

Thanks to his twin brother Vergil, leader of the anti-establishment group called “The Order”, Dante is now discovering and coming to terms with what it means to be the child of a demon
and an angel. This split personality has a real impact on gameplay with Dante being able to call upon angel and demon abilities at will, transforming his Rebellion sword on the fly to
dramatically affect both combat and movement.

Here is some footage from the PC version which is released tomorrow:

Nokia’s Drive+ Beta Now Available on All Windows Phone 8 Devices

Nokia has now opened up their Drive+ Beta navigation program to all Windows Phone 8 devices.  Read on for details.

drive_thumb_2EE49B70

Nokia has now opened up their Drive+ Beta navigation program to all Windows Phone 8 devices. Up until now, this navigation app was limited to Nokia handsets only; now all Windows Phone 8 handsets will be able to run this app.  This last weekend, my family took a road trip to Chicago; we ran this app on my daughter’s Lumia 822 on the way back from Chicago.  It performed admirably, essentially as fast as the on-board navigation system in my Jeep, and with the added speed limit data, my daughter was able to gently remind me of the speed limits on the roads that we travelled.  Now owners of other Windows Phone 8 handsets will have the opportunity to run this one!  Here is the blog post from Microsoft:

Nokia’s turn-by-turn app Drive+ Beta is now available on more Windows Phones

Starting today, Microsoft and Nokia are making the beta of Nokia Drive+, the company’s turn-by-turn navigation app, available for free to all Windows Phone 8 customers in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. Download it from the Windows Phone Store.

The app remains in beta as the team fine tunes the customer experience. In the meantime, you can access full turn-by-turn voice-guided navigation, offline maps, speed limit warnings, and conveniences such as day and night modes. With today’s release, the team is looking forward to hearing from even more Windows Phone customers through the app’s “feedback” tab, to help make it even better. Give it a try and let them know what you think. Learn more about Nokia Drive+ Beta .

If you are running an HTC or other Window 8 device and are in the US, UK or Canada, go ahead and add this to your phone!

SkyDrive app for Windows 8 and Windows RT adds live tiles

Microsoft have updated their SkyDrive app for Windows 8 and Windows RT.

Start_thumb_35F091D5

This is what was posted on the blog:

Starting today, the SkyDrive app from the Windows Store will start showing you notifications on the live tile when you add new files to your SkyDrive. Now the tile for the SkyDrive app will be useful for more than just launching the app, by providing at-a-glance info on what’s going on in your SkyDrive. Whenever you add new files to SkyDrive, the app tile shows you relevant details. If you add a document, you’ll see the document name, along with when it was added, and what folder it’s in. If you add photos, the tile gives you a nice view of those photos.

I am a big fan of SkyDrive and use it all the time so I am very happy to see this addition.

Ubisoft Releases Update for Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Online with New Mode, Map and Clan Matches

Today, Ubisoft announced the release of the 0.10.0 update for its free-to-play PC shooter Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Online. This latest game update brings a host of new content, including the Holdout game mode, the Balaklava Sub Pen map and the Clan Match feature, as well as several game service improvements and fixes. The 0.10.0 update coincides with the release of the new Triton Pack featuring naval-themed avatars, weapons and armour.

TRITON_ingame-screenshot3

Holdout Game Mode

The teamwork, tactics, and strategies of players will be tested in the newest game mode for Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Online. In the Holdout game mode, both teams will contend over a single capture point set in the middle of the map. Take control of the point, and defend it until the round ends to emerge victorious. With shorter round timers, and both teams converging on a single capture point, players can expect fierce and frantic firefights in Holdout.

Balaklava Sub Pen Map

Designed specifically for the new Holdout mode, the Balaklava Sub Pen map is inspired by the formerly classified, underground submarine facility in Ukraine that was operational until 1993.

Symmetrical and compact in design, with only one capture point, the map gives players of all skill levels plenty of opportunities to jump into the fight and start having fun right away. The map offers a lot of depth with multiple strategic areas and approaches to the capture point – whether it be the folding bridge that offers an elevated vantage point, or the tunnel entrances that provide flanking opportunities.

TRITON_ingame-screenshot2

Triton Pack

Complementing the naval theme of the new map is the new Triton Pack. Players will be able to outfit their Ghosts in brand-new helmets and armor vests, equip them with upgraded weapons, and personalize their profile with custom avatars. The Triton Pack will only be available for a limited time throughout the month of January.

Clan Matches

Following up from the introduction of the Clan feature in October 2012, which gave players the opportunity to create and join clans, players will now be able set up custom matches against other clans.

Form a squad from your own clan mates, pick a map of your choice, and send out a challenge to your rival clans – it’s time for all the GRO clans to show off their skills and find out who is the best.

TRITON_ingame-screenshot1

According to Theo Sanders, the game’s Producer:

We’re really excited about the 0.10.0 update. The Holdout mode and the Balaklava Sub Pen map offer new tactical challenges and experiences to the community, and decking out your Ghost in the new Triton gear makes them look awesome.

We’re also keeping our promise to the community with the introduction of the Clan Match feature. Fighting alongside your clan mates and friends, challenging another clan; social competition is such an integral part of the GRO experience, and this feature goes a long way towards fueling this experience.

Ingame_Env-Subpen02

Here is the trailer for the update entitled Luck Don’t Live Here:

Developed by Ubisoft Singapore, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Online® delivers a premium online multiplayer shooter experience that is downloadable and playable for free on PC. Players can choose between three classes: Assault, Specialist, or Recon, to suit their particular style of play. As they evolve through the game, each Class character can deploy unique Class Devices and other hi-tech equipment to enhance not only their individual combat effectiveness, but also that of their team. Players can enhance their game experience by using either in-game points or premium currency to purchase and equip their Ghosts with weapons, gear and other boosts. Exclusive Dead Space 3 Q&A with John Calhoun

1

We have an exclusive Q&A with Dead Space 3 Associate Producer John Calhoun.

DS3_EAx360PFTltd_front01_thumb1_thum

Dead Space 3 cuts to the heart of deep space terror with award-winning suspense, horror, action and sound. Slated for release in the dead of winter, players will embark on a thrilling ride through space that takes them to a hostile new planet, Tau Volantis. There, they must battle violent, subzero conditions and deadly, highly-evolved enemies including new Necromorphs, gigantic boss creatures and – for the first time in the series – a faction of Unitologist soldiers on a misguided mission.

Over to John:

1. How will Dead Space 3 attract new visitors to the franchise? Is pre-play of 1 & 2 a pre-requisite and if not, how do you ensure they’re suitably informed?

The most important thing we can do to attract new players is to make a kick-ass, high-quality game! More than anything else, gamers want fun and thrills; when we deliver on that expectation, people are going to check us out. But we hope Dead Space 3 will also attract new players with the game’s optional drop-in, drop-out co-op experience. For long-time fans, it’s an entirely new way to play Dead Space. And for people who may have found previous Dead Space games too scary or challenging to play alone, it gives them the option to take down the terror with a friend.

Playing the previous Dead Space games is not a pre-requisite to enjoying Dead Space 3. Obviously, veterans will be able to rely on their strategic dismemberment skills and knowledge from past games. But new players will be able to jump into the action with a slick “Previously On” video, and a spine-tingling tutorial level will ensure they know the basics before the action gets too intense.

2. During the past two titles Isaac faced his foes alone, and that was a major factor in setting the mood and atmosphere. How will you balance the original game’s deep sense of abandonment with the camaraderie of additional characters in Dead Space 3?

We’ve always had additional characters in Dead Space games; in fact, knowing that other people are relying on you to survive (or vice-a-versa) is part of what makes our atmosphere unique. The addition of optional co-op to Dead Space 3 hasn’t changed this. If you choose to play in single-player, Isaac Clarke is still on his own. He’s isolated from his squad and has to rely on his engineering skills and wits to survive. There aren’t any AI followers to back him up in a fight, or NPCs that you’ll have to escort through a level. As in previous Dead Space games, you’ll be facing the Necromorphs alone. It’s only when you choose to play in co-op that Isaac is joined by John Carver, a trained soldier with a troubled past. The dialogue and some of the cut-scenes between Isaac and Carver are unique to co-op, making the two experiences pretty different.

3. The schizophrenic-like symptoms caused by the Markers have always been a staple of the Dead Space franchise. How will the dementia affect the main characters of Dead Space 3? Will the gameplay undergo variations? If so, to what extent?

This question is venturing into spoiler territory, so I don’t want to give away too much. If you’ve finished Dead Space 2, you’ll know that Isaac is more or less freed from his Marker-induced dementia. But he continues to carry the Marker signals in his brain, and has the unique ability to understand the Marker’s language. How this plays out in Dead Space 3 is a secret that you’ll have to experience for yourself.

But just because Isaac can fight through the Marker dementia, it doesn’t mean that everyone else is immune. John Carver, for example, sometimes struggles to understand what’s real and what’s not. The way this plays out in co-op is subtle, and we hope players will sometimes question if what they’re seeing is real, or if they’re even seeing the same things at all.

4. How is the co-op going to affect the narrative of the main story? Are the players going to lose something (in terms of story progression, exclusive items etc.) if they decide to play on their own?

Co-op is optional, and fully drop-in, drop-out. This means that the game is designed to keep the story moving along with or without the presence of a second character. The main narrative arc, which is about exploring the frozen plains of Tau Volantis for the key to stopping the Markers, is the same in both styles of play. In single-player, the dialogue and some cutscenes change to focus solely on Isaac – making it clear that it’s up to him, and him alone, to accomplish this goal. In co-op, the dialogue changes to accommodate John Carver, and you’ll learn more about his own personal reasons for wanting to stop the Markers. Nobody will miss out on the main beats of the story, although the tone and content are different enough that we hope fans will try out the game both ways. (And let us know which was your favorite!)

5. Isaac’s voice was often heard on Dead Space 2, in comparison to Dead Space 1. Is this something we should expect to see in Dead Space 3 as well, and if yes, why?

Absolutely! Giving Isaac a voice and relatable personality were big goals in Dead Space 2, and we’re pushing this even further in Dead Space 3 with a more sophisticated animation and cinematic engine. Isaac doesn’t just emote vocally – you’ll see anguish and relief in his facial expressions, eye movements, and body language. Having a more expressive character is a big part of bridging the gap between what the player sees on the screen, and what he experiences in his mind. We try to make sure Isaac only speaks when we think players would have something to say, or have other characters talk to him only when players might have a question that needs to be answered. It’s all part of creating a high-quality, immersive experience.

6. Tell us more about oxygen supply in vacuum areas. It seems that it is a strong survival horror element – will it dramatically affect the gameplay by challenging the player?

The airless environments are foremost about creating a “real space” vibe to the game; it’s not just about creating an element of survival (although it does that, too). Mostly, it’s about letting players experience what it would be like to be in the real vacuum of space. So you hear your heartbeat and breathing more. The ambient audio is muffled, to mimic the experience of sounds being transmitted via vibrations in your suit. Light from the sun is brighter in vacuum areas due to the lack of atmosphere. The gameplay challenge isn’t too significant, but you will have to be mindful to scavenge for O2 tanks whenever your oxygen supply starts to run low.

7. With Dead Space 1 & 2 there were tie-in games, comics, and an anime to become further immerse in the DS universe. Can we expect something similar this time around?

Dead Space 3’s launch is accompanied by a graphic novel, “Dead Space Liberation,” that focuses on John Carver’s backstory. You’ll learn how he came to get mixed up with the Markers and Necromorphs, and why he’s on a mission to destroy them forever. There’s also a new book out, “Dead Space Catalyst,” that dives deep into the overall Dead Space lore that we’ve teased over the past few games.

8. What was the reason behind adding the Kinect functionality? Will it use movement controls or is it solely voice-control? Can you give us some examples of voice commands?

Dead Space 3 supports voice commands via the Kinect. In fact, we’re the first game ever to feature co-op exclusive voice commands! This means you can find your partner, share ammo, or request help just by shouting at your screen. There are also a bunch of commands for all styles of play, such as the ability to browse your RIG’s interface, reload weapons, fire stasis, and more. We added Kinect functionality because we truly think it adds to the Dead Space experience. If your veteran player, you’ll appreciate the ability to navigate straight to your objective screen, or instantly share a pick-up with your friend.

9. Do you feel that the scepticism of Dead Space fans towards DS 3 is justified?

Dead Space 3 is a big game with a lot of new features, but it’s still a Dead Space game through and through. It’s made by the same team that made Dead Space 1 and 2, and believe me when I say WE’RE the franchise’s biggest fans. We not only want Dead Space 3 to maintain the integrity and atmosphere that the franchise is known for, but we’re also in a position to ensure that this happens.

The scepticism comes from the fact that we want to show off all the new stuff, but we have to do it in 1 and 2 minute videos or gameplay segments that aren’t representative of the whole game. If we release a trailer that shows 30 seconds of action, it doesn’t mean that Dead Space 3 is entirely an action game. Similarly, we’re proud of co-op and want to demo it whenever we can – but people then forget that the entire game can be played in single-player, with no AI followers. Dead Space 3 is long, epic, intense, and atmospheric. It can’t be conveyed in a YouTube clip. My advice to fans is to play the game when it launches, or download the demo, and judge for yourself. You’ll see that this is the best Dead Space game yet.

10. Are we likely to see Dead Space continue as a series of games?

Right now, we’re just focused on making Dead Space 3 as polished and high quality as possible. We’ll only think about the future once that job is finished!
