Chester-Le-Street Community Centre Association has been awarded a £1,000 donation from Vodafone UK. The charity collected the Vodafone Community Connection Award last week after the store team in Chester-Le-Street chose the deserving cause.

Launched in 2014, Vodafone’s Community Connection Awards have already made a difference to more than 170 local communities across the UK. Selected by local Vodafone staff and aimed at supporting local causes with a £1,000 donation, the awards have been used to help fund everything from new equipment for soup kitchens and day centres for the elderly to helping people with disabilities take part in sporting activities.

Chester-Le-Street Community Centre Association offers a variety of activities and classes for local residents, including yoga, a bowls club and the charity’s own north east concert band. A section of the centre, based on Newcastle Road, has suffered from consistent flooding. The £1,000 award will help fund a new sump pump to automatically pump out any flooded water to the nearest drain, ensuring the centre is always accessible.

Julie Dryden-Smith, Centre Manager at Chester-Le-Street Community Centre Association said, “We wish to express our gratitude at being awarded the £1,000 Vodafone Community Connection Award. Over the last couple of years, the building has suffered from flooding whenever we’ve experienced bad weather and this money will help us solve that issue. Again, thank you for this amazing award!”

Paula Newton, Vodafone Store Manager in Chester-Le-Street said, “We were thrilled when we had a chance to select Chester-Le-Street Community Centre Association as our award winner. It’s a self-funded charity that caters for a wide range of age groups and we know it makes a difference to our customers here in Chester-Le-Street.”
