If you love The Walking Dead, you are going to go nuts for The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival. It has some dated influences, as it reminded me of Streets of Rage. However, there is a lot more depth, as character progression, an array of weapons, and an interesting story take centre stage.

Odaclick Game Studio has developed this dark, zombie side-scrolling title. It is a single-player experience that demands a strong stomach and some fast reactions. You’ll take on survivors and zombies as you try to complete missions, overcome powerful leaders, and avoid the zombie horde.

The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival and the All Out War.

The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival tells the famous All Out War storyline. Although an understanding of this chapter helps, you won’t feel alienated if you are new to the franchise. The plot captures the story perfectly with core characters, Saviors, and zombies aplenty.

The story delivers familiar locations such as Alexandria, Hilltop, and the Sanctuary. It remains pretty faithful to the original storyline, but there are some nice surprises to keep you on your toes. Consequently, it’s amazing for hardcore fans and those who just love zombies and ruthless action.

Focus on the goals.

The story sets things up nicely as you tackle an array of branching missions. Each of the 3 protagonists must work alone as they master their weapons and explore dark and dangerous environments. Each level is filled with goons, zombies, and at least one huge boss. This structured approach may be too rigid for some, but I liked the driven design.

The levels comprise a core progression element and some nice lore items. Each of these must be found hidden behind locked doors or inside ancient chests. This will appeal to completionists and those who love to search every nook and cranny. However, most of it can be avoided if this isn’t your thing.

As you romp around each stage, you’ll find weapons, knowledge points, and other aspects to improve your character. This is what makes The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival stand out from other side-scrolling affairs. There is some nice character progression that changes the difficulty for each hero. Although it isn’t particularly complex, it offers enough variety to make a real difference.

The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival is grim.

The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival uses a pixelated finish to great effect. The world has a grim undertone that is matched by the lack of polish and the sombre colour palette. Furthermore, each goon and zombie is nicely animated with basic and simple movement patterns. The result is a predictable outcome that helps you to plan your approach. The audio mixes upbeat moments with dramatic tunes. The sense of despair is a consistent theme, and this makes you wonder how you’ll survive.

The controls are a little clunky and clumsy. The hit boxes lack accuracy, and this is frustrating when tackling large groups of foes. On top of this, the aiming can be a little wayward, and this causes annoyance when tackling huge bosses. The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival allows you to revisit each stage as many times as you wish. This is ideal if you wish to farm resources and beef up your character. Other than this, replay value is sadly limited.

The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival is a great title.

I’m a fan of this genre, and I love The Walking Dead. Consequently, I was always going to like The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival. The story is dark and seedy, and the characters remind you of the TV franchise. Yes, it lacks replay value, but I didn’t mind. I like the visuals, the audio, and the short, sharp quests. Accordingly, I think it’s great, and I recommend buying it here! Can you survive the mean streets of The Walking Dead? Choose your hero, master your weapon, and stay alive!

SUMMARY

The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival is a chilling tale of death and oppression. Following the much-loved chapter closely, this title captures the characters, atmosphere, and story perfectly. However, it has some nice surprises to keep you guessing.
