Five simple ways to streamline your phone apps

You know the feeling, you unlock your phone and face a chaotic cluster of apps you barely recognise, and it feels like you’re scrolling through a mess just to find the ones you actually use. A lot of us let old ones pile up until the phone feels more like a junk drawer than a useful tool. But it’s pretty easy to tidy things up and make your device feel faster and more personal again.

Why your phone always feels cluttered

It’s easy to install things just in case or out of curiosity and then never delete them. But all those extra icons stick around, even if you haven’t opened them in ages. It’s like never cleaning out your closet until, eventually, you can’t find your favourite shirt.

Similarly, a phone full of apps makes it harder to find the one you really need when you want it.

How to clear out the ones you don’t use

Go through your phone and uninstall anything you haven’t touched in the last few months. You’ll probably spot a few you downloaded on a whim and then forgot about. Removing those will free up storage space and leave you with less clutter when you’re searching for an app.

Keep the ones that still bring value or enjoyment, whether that’s your favourite podcast player or an app for online slot games you like to dip into for a bit of fun

How to organise your remaining apps

Now bring order by grouping similar ones into clearly labelled folders. For example, you might put your social media apps into a folder called “Social” and your mobile banking tools into one called “Finance”. This way, every app has a home and you won’t have to scroll through dozens of icons to find what you need. You’ll also spend a lot less time swiping around, and it’s satisfying to know where everything is.

How to maximise the use of your home screen

Your home screen is prime real estate. Your first screen should only have the apps you rely on every day (like your messages and camera). Everything else can go on other pages or inside folders. Widgets can also give you quick info. For example, the Met Office’s refreshed app provides a daily or hourly weather widget so you can easily see the latest forecast.

A tidy home screen greets you with useful tools, not a wall of random icons. Keep your main screen minimal and focused on the apps you use most often.

Why it’s important to consider notifications

If too many apps are sending alerts, your phone can turn into a source of stress. Every unnecessary buzz like a sale alert or a game invite adds clutter and distraction. Decide which notifications matter to you (like texts from friends or bank alerts) and silence the rest. When your device only pings for things you care about, you’ll check it less and feel more in control.
