Great audio can be enjoyed no matter the cost. Yes, you may need to make sacrifices, but I’ve been surprised by some fantastic entry point headsets. RIG rarely disappoint, and their latest 400 Gen2 HX headset brought a smile to my face. This comfortable Xbox-focused headset is the perfect accessory if you don’t want to break the bank. Available for under $40, it packs an almighty wallop

The 40mm drivers deliver a crisp and clear tonal range. Furthermore, the bass is impressive, and the microphone pickup is clean, and it has flip-to-mute technology. This is ideal if you have children or you wish to keep some conversations private. On top of this, it can be used across an array of gaming platforms. The 3.5mm jack is suitable for any compatible device. Yes, it lacks wireless technology, but this matters not. The passive charging keeps you in the game, and the power draw is remarkably low. As such, this is the perfect device for lazy gamers who don’t wish to charge their devices.

What’s in the box of the 400 Gen2 HX headset?

  • The packaging has a distinct Xbox theme. Moreover, it has every vital selling point.
  • The 400 Gen2 HX headset is available in several colours. I’m reviewing the Urban Camo version. It has a built-in 3.5mm audio cable, and the padding is plush, comfortable, and ideal for lengthy gaming sessions.
  • A Dolby Atmos 12-month activation code is provided.
  • Learn the basics with the quick start guide.

Technical aspects.

Wired gaming isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. I find it a user-friendly approach that removes the worry of battery life and other technical faults. Though I have plenty of wireless accessories, I like the straightforward design. Passive charging has a minor impact on any connected device. As such, you will notice a small performance drop on your Xbox controller. The drop is negligible, but you may need to charge it more often if you ramp up the volume.

Versatility is key! A multiplatform headset will appeal to younger gamers, parents, and people on a smaller budget. Moreover, who wants 5 headsets lying around for each of their gaming machines? I don’t, and I’m sure you’d prefer a Jack of all trades headset.

If you love 3D audio, the 400 Gen2 HX headset will blow your mind. RIG has included a 12-month subscription in the price. This is incredible value for money and an absolute game-changer. Once you play an FPS or racing game with Dolby audio, you will never go back. I recommend downloading the free Xbox and Microsoft app for the ultimate experience. Word of warning, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch users cannot take advantage of the app.

Usability.

Complexity and the 400 Gen2 HX headset do not go hand-in-hand. This out-of-the-box, plug-and-play peripheral is ideal for impatient gamers. Alternatively, you can adjust audio settings to your heart’s content. The wired design prevents issues with stability and uncomfortable static. During testing, I never experienced any latency issues or broken communication. Moreover, there was no hideous echoing due to poor connectivity.

The flip-to-mute mic is a godsend. Privacy is essential, and this simple-to-activate switch prevents unwanted conversations from hitting the airwaves. The basic swivel design is strong and easy to use. Additionally, the mic position is comfortable and rarely gets in your way. If you need to alter your volume or earcup position, this can be done with the tactile volume wheel or the handy lugs on the outside of each earcup.

Audio quality.

I have tested some fantastic entry-level Turtle Beach headsets, and the 400 Gen2 HX headset competes with them nicely. The microphone delivers a warm and clean pickup that your teammates will appreciate. Though there isn’t a popping filter, I had no complaints of unwanted noises and horrible static.

The Dolby Atmos delivers incredible 3D sound. This makes this product stand out from its peers. Furthermore, the impressive range of tones can be easily identified. Low, mid, and high tones are recognisable, and the bass is strong without drowning out the overall experience.

Build quality.

This headset has an unusual design that will divide its audience. Each earcup must be placed in a slot to match your required size. Small, medium, and large are the options, and you must take a stab in the dark as you construct your audio device. There is a reassuring click as you piece together your headset, and adjusting the size is a piece of cake. However, it is only RIG products that use this strange and interesting design choice.

The grey urban camo livery hugs a robust and flexible headband. Moreover, there is a plush headband cushion, and the earcups are great for longer gaming sessions. The foam cushions do not overheat, and they do not pinch your temples if you wear glasses.

I appreciated the industrial and almost futuristic design, but I’m not sure it will appeal to everyone. The darker livery breaks up the strong lines, and this will make this headset more appealing to a larger audience.

Is the 400 Gen2 HX headset worth it?

This entry-level headset offers great value for money. Although it is more expensive than the Recon 70 from Turtle Beach, it includes Dolby Atmos. This is a game-changer and something that will improve your gaming life. Additionally, it is straightforward to use, incredibly comfortable to wear, and I appreciate the audio and mic quality. Accordingly, I think it is a great headset and I recommend buying it here!
