An actual cool math game
Math kids rejoice! There’s a new option on the market, and it is quite the tale to be told. For good and bad reasons. Hi my name is Phant0m and these are my thoughts on… tales of mathasia!
Visuals
The look of this game is nice. It’s simple but colorful, different yet familiar. Which is kinda cool, it does feel familiar like an old tv show or an old game, and it still feels massively different most likely due to the way the characters look. Which they look nice, out there, creative, but not by much, some of the designs didn’t really catch my eye like the lion or mouse. But others like the owl and walrus did. Their design looked cute or eye-catching which is necessary to hold the attention of kids (or the entirety of gen z).
Gameplay
Sadly there was something that didn’t hold my attention and it was the gameplay, the animations of answering questions was way too slow. In one section of the game i found myself in the most tedious combine and count how many fishes are in the baskets type of levels, imagine counting something to combine them, and the game proceeds to count them after you already did, it became frustrating and annoying, especially since theres only 4 vastly different levels and this takes up a very small percentage of them but was just super slow. But it wasn’t all bad because the other levels were fine, they didn’t waste your time and instead stimulated me by putting a timer on me to get the questions right, and somehow me at 18 actually got a few questions wrong because of the excitement that came from the clock. The math problems are simple and is well made for kids less than 3rd grade, since there’s no math problems that get harder than that, and most gameplay levels should thrill your kids!
Story/Characters/Music
This is where things start to look up for the game, the story of saving this cute world with math problems should definitely appeal to children! I thought there were cute or cool moments in dialogue that sparked some enjoyment for the childish side of my brain, I’m not gonna sit here and say its the best thing i’ve ever seen but it’s fun, simple and entertaining, what else could you ask for? Furthermore the characters are also very iconic and I can imagine kids being interested in not only helping these characters but also wanting them in their day to day life by mentioning them, maybe even wanting toys of them. But something that i wish was better was the voice acting, most of the actors felt like it was either their first take, or passionless, the energy given off by them disappointed me; although character seem fun and vibrant and full of energy to save the world, the voice of them sounds as if they wanted to be elsewhere. An easy improvement would be to just get rid of all barriers and make them just as all out and fun as their dialogue is. Moreover the music is also fun, its got a simple jingle that helped me have fun in this cute world.
Performance
The performance of the game runs pretty solid, I had no Issue in my hour and a half journey. My game didn’t crash, it did not drop frames, it didn’t have any issues as far as i can tell.
Verdict
Lastly, if your wondering, I do recommend this game. I think Tales of Mathasia is a decent math game that is educational, but isn’t as fun as I hoped it’d be. It does a good job of developing something simple and fun for young children, but provides nothing for anyone outside of the demographic. I give it a 6.5/10. Some issues heavily outweigh some of the positives; but at the end of the day it still has enough positives to be fun! Those were my thoughts on Tales of Mathasia! Thanks for reading! And keep doing great things! Your good at them. Bye 🙂
Side Notes
I think Tales of Mathasia is a game that could be amazing on mobile, it’s simple concept would be easy to transfer onto small screens and gain a big kid audience (especially if made cheap). I also didn’t like that I couldn’t use the mouse to click ahead of dialogue, it always had to be space. The Pc I used is a laptop using a GTX 1650 and an Intel I5 10300H and 16 GB of RAM.
