By now, everyone knows the link between games and strategy and how some titles or board games can boost intelligence and critical thinking skills. Whether you prefer to play on a tabletop or online, there are plenty of ways to challenge yourself while challenging others. But everyone reaches a point when they can’t figure out their next move, especially when facing some of the trickiest players in the hobby. So, how can you sharpen your strategy skills to finally get over your hump?

Play Other Games

Playing other games allows you to explore different types of strategies and various approaches that lead you to victory. While you may have enjoyed the all-guns-blazing approach of many RPGs, other stealth-based games encourage patience and planning to ensure you complete missions.

On the physical front, games like chess or similar can remind you to think further ahead. Although you don’t know what your opponent will do next, you can plot your moves to influence the game and force them into making mistakes that lead you to victory.

Ask More Questions

If you’re new to any game, you won’t know the intricacies and nuances that define your strategy, which is why asking questions to more experienced players can be so beneficial. It’s not enough to simply see what they do. You need to ask them why they made this move or that play. Sometimes, these moves may not seem logical, especially if other options seem easier. Asking questions can help you identify the best times to strike or when to play defensive so you don’t leave your side of the board exposed.

Apply What You’ve Learned

You’re probably an expert at balancing gaming and studies to ensure you can keep up at school while still enjoying some crucial downtime. But did you know you could combine your studies with gaming and apply what you’ve learned to your next session?

Many games feature references to classical literature, history, or math, so looking for these clues can help you understand more about the game, which helps develop a better appreciation. Furthermore, the problem-solving skills you’ve obtained in your classes can be used in some games to help you get past those pesky levels that leave you stumped.

Understand Your Strengths

The best strategies play to your strengths while masking your weaknesses. Through this, you can make it easier to get the upper hand on opponents to push your way toward victory. Consider an RPG. If you aren’t great at aiming your weapon but feel comfortable being patient to sneak up on opponents, take this approach in your online play. As for board games, someone who recognizes patterns more easily than others needs to pay close attention to the board to identify these patterns and do everything they can to block opponents from making moves that could affect your chances of victory.

Have A Plan B

As much as you might trust your strategy and have seen it work hundreds of times, everyone needs a plan B. There will always be another player who brings chaos or a strategy you don’t know how to deal with, so having a backup plan can help you prevent defeat and even pull a victory out of nowhere.

Of course, you may not know you need to use plan B initially, but it’s worth keeping it in mind whenever you go into tournaments or online lobbies.

Watch Others Play

Many people enjoy following Twitch streamers for their chats and their personalities, but these influencers can also help you improve your skills and strategy. They could highlight different tips and techniques that you had never thought of which you can then work on to improve your skills when playing. Similarly, you can find hundreds of strategy guides on YouTube for various games that give you different plays to try.

Get Feedback From Peers

Playing with friends or strangers both online and in person provides the fun social aspect of games. But besides a little friendly competition, you can also take the opportunity to get feedback, especially if you’re against more experienced players. Since they have done everything and gone through the same learning curve you’re experiencing now, they can offer valuable advice to help sharpen your skills and become a better all-around player.

Strategizing

Improving your strategy skills can help you in various aspects of your life. It can boost your performance while playing games online or with friends and family but could also enhance your approach to exercise, your career, or your life to sharpen your skills and look at life a little differently.
