Review: GENIE Reprise

GENIE Reprise proves that a walking simulator can be a captivating experience. This fantasy title is slow and linear. However, the stunning surroundings and intense story keep you returning for more. Additionally, the game twists and turns as you explore 15 unique chapters of a strange but beautiful tale.

This walking simulation game was developed by Tonguc Bodur and published by Eastasiasoft Limited. What’s more, in typical Bodur fashion, it has oppressive statues and plenty of hidden meanings. Moreover, it is wonderfully relaxing as everything unfolds at a gentle pace.

A patch of broken crystals await you.

GENIE Reprise proves that Bodur is back in form.

My last Bodur review was The Redress of Mira. This game disappointed me as it fell short on many key elements. Thankfully, though, GENIE Reprise proves that Bodur is back in form! The incredible soundtrack, visuals, and story will pique your interest. Furthermore, the relaxing pace and simple-to-understand approach ensure you focus on the story and little else.

The plot revolves around Lula and her journey through a fantasy world. As she explores each location, she collects shards of a broken crystal. Once every fragment is collected, a new verse of the Genie’s poem is discovered. Moreover, as the poem is told, the surrounding world evolves. Consequently, you experience some surreal but stunning locations.

Time to walk through an amber-infused mushroom forest.

Straightforward mechanics.

If you want a complex game that tests your grey matter, this won’t be for you. Yet, if you wish to be drawn into a bizarre but striking, slow-paced world, then GENIE Reprise will be right up your street. Every chapter is set in a tiny gaming arena. Additionally, each world takes on a new form. This simple but intelligent move ensures that you never tire of the straightforward mechanics.

As you walk around each stage, you must look for each fragment of the crystal. Luckily, this is easy as a beam highlights their location. Once you have gathered each piece, a portal spawns, and you listen to a snippet of the Genie’s poem. This gameplay loop forms the backbone of the gameplay and the action rarely breaks this pattern.

Though this could be seen as repetitive, I loved the straightforward approach. Additionally, it allowed me to take in the breathtaking scenery while digesting every element of the interesting tale.

GENIE Reprise looks amazing.

GENIE Reprise doesn’t focus on realism. Subsequently, it lacks a modern finish. However, this matters not as the fantasy edge was amazing to look at. Furthermore, Bodur has the freedom to incorporate his signature statues. Moreover, the plot can twist and turn without justification. Accordingly, you are taken on a weird but wonderful adventure.

The audio is where this excels. The beautiful ambient sounds and relaxing soundtrack are divine. On top of this, the voice-over work sets the scene and every segment of the poem is a treat.

An eerie statue is found in a dark cave.

Simple controls.

In typical genre fashion, GENIE Reprise is easy to play. Yes, there are some minor puzzles to overcome, and the environment can be tough to navigate, but the controls never let you down. You can’t go wrong with a basic control layout and responsive inputs.

Where this is lacking is replay value and longevity. Disappointingly, there are no hidden gems to discover en route. Moreover, there isn’t a reason to return once you finish this title. Thankfully, though, the first playthrough was so good that I didn’t mind.

GENIE Reprise is a great indie game.

Finding an inexpensive and captivating indie game is hard work. Yet, GENIE Reprise ticks both of these boxes. This lush walking simulation title looks great and sounds even better. Furthermore, it is relaxing, bizarre, and a joy to play. Accordingly, I recommend buying it here! Can you piece together the Genie’s poem? Explore the world, listen to the words, and enjoy the surreal journey.

SUMMARY
