Poker has become one of the most played card games around the world and is now enjoyed by millions of players online too. Thanks to an increase in access to lightweight, fast devices like smartphones, data, and Wi-Fi everywhere, and the tech that game developers have – it has never been more accessible or more fun than it is right now.

The great thing about poker games is that even though we say poker, we are actually talking about a lot of different variations, and now that includes online poker too.

So how can you make the most of all the types of poker? From throwing chips down on the table with friends and family to deciding if you’re going to up the ante on online poker.

The Popularity of Poker

While poker in all its forms is undeniably one of the most played casino games, there was a Poker Book that showed that between 2003 and 2006, more players than ever started playing Texas Hold’Em. The suggested start of poker gaining huge momentum was when the release of the cult-classic poker movie Rounders hit the screens.

The Moneymaker effect came into play when he won the 2003 WSOP Main Event, and the reason that was such big news was that he won his seat on an $86 satellite tournament and walked away with $2.5 million.

The next few years were rocky for poker when a slew of new rules and regulations came into play, and many online poker websites were taken down. However, since then, there are now hundreds of online casinos that offer poker, poker console games and, of course, the classic poker games played at home.

Best Way to Play Poker at Home

While most people are happy with a table, some snacks, and a good set of cards – you can create something that is a lot more entertaining and replicate the feeling of a land-based casino with just a few items.

Keep the cash low unless everyone at the table can afford to lose big bucks. Start with some cents rather than dollars and having a max bet set at either 5 or 10 dollars is a good start.

Home games tend to run a lot slower than online games or land-based casinos because they involve more chatter and relaxation. Getting a card shuffler and playing with two packs of cards can help a game progress at a faster pace. You can also implement a poker clock to keep people making moves within a time frame and moving the game forward at a steady pace.

There are a couple of options for making your table look more like a poker table. A rollout felt can be great if you have limited storage space. A great alternative is investing in a dedicated fold-out poker table. Using a poker table means that everything will be given a specific space and looks neater.

High-quality poker chips are a must to make a home game feel like a real-world casino; plastic chips are great and will last for a while – but for a higher-quality game, customisable ceramic chips are perfect. And, whenever possible, opt for a weighted chip, as they will feel great to play with too.

Other accessories like a high-quality carrycase to be able to pack everything away and keep them safe. Dice are often included; even though they aren’t used in poker, they can be used for other card games. Creating a home game that feels like the real deal is an experience that every player will appreciate.

The Best Way to Play Poker Online

For any game you play online, ideally, you have a setup that can accommodate how you like to play. People who like to play poker online usually play for a few hours on a home desktop or via a poker app.

You might like to listen to music when you play or prefer the in-game sound of the chips and the shuffling of cards. And to experience the best sound, a great set of noise-cancelling headphones with a clear sound is ideal.

A dedicated gaming headset like the Razer Kraken is a great option. However, if you prefer something that isn’t too “gamer”, then the Sony WH-1000XM4 is great – and works beautifully on many devices.

A good monitor will mean you get to enjoy poker games in the best way possible. Consider something like the Dell UltraSharp UP3017, as it has a large 30-inch screen and offers a super clear display – meaning you’ll never miss a thing. For multi-tabling players, two screens are great, but many prefer a three-screen set-up so that you can have one screen with your hand-tracking software and a game or more on each screen.

And in either case, one of the most important things to have a great evening of poker is a snack drawer filled with your favorite bites to fuel an evening of top-quality play.
