EGX 2022 – Hands-On with Wo Long Fallen Dynasty!

From Team NINJA and Koei Tecmo Games (Nioh, Dead or Alive) comes the explosive new Soulsborne action-adventure game, Wo Long Fallen Dynasty. Revealed earlier this year, I managed to try out the demo at EGX 2022. Here’s what I thought about this difficult dark fantasy epic.

The demo was played with PS5 controllers and played smoothly throughout my experience. The controls made sense for this style of game and moves were easy to pick up. What will be a challenge is timing. Timing parries, dodges, and attacks are crucial to stay alive. I don’t profess to be that good when it comes to Soulsborne games, but I know to know what I’m getting in for. It’s challenging. Combat is brutal. It is, however, an incredible amount of fun and despite dying more times than I will publicly admit, I never felt frustrated to the point I wanted to give up.

Set in the later Han Dynasty of China, Wo Long Fallen Dynasty tells the story of a nameless soldier fighting for survival in a world where demons plague the lands. Fighting off monsters with hidden powers within and intricate swordplay. You can switch between defensive and offensive moves and master when to use what will be the difference between restarting a section of the game and progressing deeper into the adventure.

Going through the start of the game, it looks like there will be a detailed character customisation ability prior to jumping in. This will help make the character your own. It is not yet known how much voiceover the game will feature, but I suspect the player character may be silent. This will immerse the player into being the unknown protagonist. Once loaded into the demo, I found myself in a cave area, planting standards and fighting off a very diverse array of monsters. One that stands out is the tiger creature. Fighting it requires mastery of the dodge to avoid a frenzied flurry of attacks. This tiger creature is now my mortal nemesis, and I will defeat it when the game launches! Very little else was given away in terms of the story or where the game will take you, but I am intrigued to find out more.

When it comes to the character, and as you would expect, there is a leveling-up system to better improve your skills and abilities. Enemies will also have a level so you can decide for yourself if you want to fight or try and get past them.

The controls felt solid during my gameplay session, and I think with practice the combo moves and control layout will fall into place.

Wo Long Fallen Dynasty Sound and Visuals

I was blown away by just how good this demo copy looked. Wo Long Fallen Dynasty is going to be a spectacular visual feast. The fluidity of movement when performing sword-based action (which is based on Chinese martial arts) was flawless. The movement and switching between offensive and defensive blended so well that it felt like one continuous dance, rather than the clunky affair it can be. In addition, the powers and skill trees will offer up countless combos as each player works out their own preferred style.

Conclusions and Release

A dark, supernatural action-adventure game set in the Three Kingdoms. Wo Long Fallen Dynasty is shaping up to be the next great game in the Soulsborne category. Be under no illusion, it will be incredibly difficult (and is not likely to have an easy mode) but incredibly satisfying to play. With its stunning next-gen visuals, I can’t wait to review the game in full… oh, and finally beat that tiger. Wo Long Fallen Dynasty is slated for release in early 2023 on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

When I was seven years old, I tried to write a spy novel. It was terrible; in case you wondered, but I’ve always loved stories. Then I got to play video games and suddenly here were stories that could be told in so many ways, coming to life in front of my eyes. I’ve been hooked ever since and enjoy games on pretty much every platform you can imagine! (Primarily PS5, Switch and PC (Steam Deck) with a lot of retro SEGA, Sony, and Nintendo). When I’m not gaming, I’m still writing that spy novel. If you love stories too, I hope my reviews and features help you discover something new! Find me on Twitter @Refelian66.
