Sony has announced its ultra-light HX50 camera. The snapper, the smallest and lightest on the market equipped with a 30x optical zoom, will serve as the successor to the Cyber-Shot HX200V.

The HX50 features image stabilisation, a 20.4 million-pixel Exmor R CMOS sensor, and a Bionz processor that is said to be ideal for shooting in low-lit conditions.

Sony claims that the device is twice as effective as its predecessors, offering twice the shooting speed and a 30x optical zoom lens with an equivalent focal length of 24-720mm in 35mm terms.

Aimed at advanced photographers, the camera has a maximum aperture of f/3.5 at the widest point of its lens, increasing to f/6.3 at the telephoto end.

Other features include WiFi and GPS support, nine automated picture settings, four movie effects and an X-type lithium-ion battery capable of powering up to 400 shots on a single charge.

The Sony HX50 will be available to buy next month, with a price yet to be confirmed.
