Gearbox has acquired the rights to Homeworld. The Borderlands developer has won the rights to the sci-fi strategy game in the auction of THQ’s intellectual property following the company’s closure.

Gearbox CEO Brian Martel spearheaded the acquisition because of his “great love and respect for Relic’s brilliant, fun and innovative game”.

“Brian intends as first priority to direct Gearbox’s interest to preserve and assemble the purest form of the original acclaimed and beloved games, Homeworld and Homeworld 2, with the intent of making them accessible on today’s leading digital platforms,” said the developer in a statement.

Last week, it was reported that an unknown entity had outbid a $50,000 crowdsourced attempt to secure the Homeworld rights. THQ filed for bankruptcy last December.
