Nokia’s North American carrier exclusive strategy was fleshed out for Canada yesterday, with Rogers announcing exclusivity on the Lumia 920. Read on for details.
Rogers announced yesterday that they will have the Nokia Lumia 920 exclusively in Canada, adding to AT&T’s announcement the other day. I have to question the wisdom of restricting carrier availability for a product that needs to be a home run for Nokia…we’ll have to wait and see how these exclusives pan out for Nokia. Here is the Rogers announcement:
TORONTO, Oct. 5, 2012 /CNW/ – Nokia and Rogers today announced that the Nokia Lumia 920 will be exclusively available to Rogers’ customers in November, adding its name to the global list of wireless operators selling the Windows Phone 8 device.
“Rogers is proud to bring the new Nokia Lumia 920 to our customers looking for the best unified experience and to further extend our leadership as the carrier with the largest LTE superphone selection in Canada,” said John Boynton, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Rogers Communications. “With seamless access to entertainment, sports and business content, the Nokia Lumia 920 offers customers a world leading internet experience powered by the Rogers LTE network.”
“Rogers’ decision to offer the Nokia Lumia 920 in Canada is another example of the forward momentum behind our Lumia devices as well as the broader Windows ecosystem,” said Don Leeke, Canada General Manager, Nokia.
The Nokia Lumia 920 includes the latest advances in Nokia PureView imaging innovation. Using advanced floating lens technology, the camera in the Nokia Lumia 920 is able to take in five times more light than competing smartphones without using flash, making it possible to capture clear, bright pictures and video indoors and at night. It also compensates for hand movement while the photo is being taken.
In addition to built-in wireless charging, the Nokia Lumia 920 also comes with Nokia City Lens, the latest addition to the Nokia location suite and the start of a new augmented reality experience that also enhances Nokia Maps. Along with enhancements to Nokia Drive and Nokia Transit, the Nokia location suite of services represents the most comprehensive, integrated mapping experience of any smartphone.
The Nokia Lumia 920 will operate across the Rogers national wireless network and will take advantage of the fastest mobile network technology in the world when operating on the Rogers LTE network; available in select Canadian cities. Visit www.rogers.com/coverage for details.
Price and other details for the Nokia Lumia 920 to be announced closer to the launch date.
So if you are in Canada, are you planning on picking one of these up on Rogers?

I have my yellow Lumia 920 pre-ordered already from Europe…Though Gray was extremely tempting!!
I want mine unlocked and without the Rogers Logo on my phone 🙂
Buy your phones unlocked and avoid 3 year contracts! It’s cheaper in the end and if you want to resell your phone you can get your next unlocked smartphone for halfprice!
Which site did you order from?? …=O
Of the ones I looked at, none of them would ship out of Europe…
Definitely yes…
Ridiculous, Elop is a complete moron, the phone needs to be available on all carriers to be a success….completely stupid move, and only available in black??? Guess that commercial about adding some colour to the mobile world is complete crap and won’t be relevant in Canada.
Absolutely stupid
I’m not sure how making your device exclusive to one of the country’s most despised carriers is supposed to be helpful to your sales. I have wanted a Windows Phone since February. As soon as I heard about Windows Phone 8 and then the 920, my mind was made up. Unfortunately, I refuse to sign up with Rogers ever again, so this is quite upsetting. I’ll wait for the 820 to show up on another carrier.
Todo List:
1. LEAVE Rogers Wireless for ANY other Provider (it is less expensive).
2. BUY a Nokia Lumia 920 outright (even for over $800, from Europe).
3. Do NOT go back to Rogers Wireless, no matter what (even for 50% OFF).
4. Enjoy the high quality “non-phone features” of the Lumia 920.
I still have my first Nokia cell phone (as a back up phone). Never had any issue in terms of hardware , abttery etc. Can’t wait to get my hands on this one
